Why hands-on AI training beats certification courses for marketers
Certifications prove you completed a syllabus. Hands-on training proves you can build something. For marketing teams adopting AI, the difference matters.
There is no shortage of AI certifications available to marketers. The Digital Marketing Institute, CIM, Coursera, Udemy, and dozens of others all offer programmes that end with a certificate. Some are genuinely good. Most cover similar ground: an overview of AI capabilities, some example use cases, an introduction to prompting, and a final assessment.
The question is whether a certificate translates into capability. In most cases, it does not.
What certifications are good at
Certifications do a few things well. They provide structured learning. They cover a broad landscape. They give participants a credential they can reference. For someone who knows nothing about AI and wants a starting point, a certification can be a reasonable first step.
They are also scalable. A large organisation can put hundreds of people through the same programme. The content is consistent. The assessment is standardised. HR can track completion rates and report progress.
What certifications do not do
Certifications do not build working systems. They do not produce AI workflows that a team can deploy the next day. They do not teach participants how to connect AI to the specific tools and platforms their marketing function uses.
The format is usually self-paced video content, some reading material, and a multiple-choice assessment. This is fine for building awareness. It is not sufficient for building capability.
A marketer who completes a certification knows what AI can do in theory. A marketer who completes a hands-on programme has built real workflows and knows what AI can do in their specific role, with their specific tools, on their specific problems.
The retention problem
There is a well-documented gap between learning and retention. People retain roughly 10% of what they read, 20% of what they see, and 75% of what they practise by doing. These numbers vary by study, but the direction is consistent.
Self-paced content — the backbone of most certification programmes — sits at the low end of that retention curve. Participants watch, nod, and forget most of it within weeks.
Live, hands-on training sits at the other end. When participants are building something in real time, troubleshooting problems, and seeing results immediately, the learning sticks. Not because the content is better, but because the format forces active engagement.
The relevance gap
Marketing is not a generic function. A paid media team’s AI needs are different from a content team’s, which are different from a marketing operations team’s. A brand marketer’s workflow challenges bear little resemblance to a performance marketer’s.
Certification programmes cannot account for this. They are designed for the widest possible audience, which means the examples are generic and the exercises are abstract. Participants finish the programme and are left to figure out on their own how any of it applies to their specific situation.
This is the point where most adoption stalls. The gap between training and implementation is where potential capability goes to waste.
Hands-on programmes designed for marketing teams avoid this problem by building around the actual workflows, tools, and challenges the participants face. The training is the implementation. There is no gap to bridge.
The environment problem
Certification programmes typically use whatever tools the participant already has access to. This sounds reasonable, but it creates a practical problem. Many marketing professionals cannot install new software on their work machines. IT policies, security restrictions, and procurement processes get in the way.
The result is that participants either cannot complete the practical elements of the programme, or they complete them on a personal device with tools they will never use at work. Either way, the training does not connect to their real operating environment.
Programmes that provide a pre-configured virtual environment — accessible from any browser, with no IT dependency — solve this completely. Participants log in and start building. No setup, no downloads, no approvals. This is a logistical detail that makes a disproportionate difference to whether training produces results.
What teams actually need
Marketing teams adopting AI need three things from training:
Specificity. Training that addresses their actual marketing workflows, not generic AI use cases. A paid media team should be building campaign analysis systems. A content team should be building production pipelines. The training should mirror what the team will do the day after it ends.
Live facilitation. Someone who has built AI systems for marketing teams, who can answer questions in real time, adjust the pace, and help troubleshoot when something does not work as expected. Not a recorded lecturer. A practitioner.
Working outputs. Participants should leave with AI workflows they built themselves and can deploy immediately. Not knowledge about AI. Not a certificate. Working systems.
The real test
The test of whether AI training has worked is not a certificate on the wall. It is whether the team is working differently six weeks later.
Are they using the workflows they built? Are they building new ones? Has the time spent on routine work decreased? Has the quality of output improved?
If the answer to these questions is yes, the training worked. If the answer is no — if everyone has a certificate but nothing has changed — then the format was wrong, regardless of how good the content was.
Choosing the right approach
This is not an argument against all structured learning. It is an argument for matching the format to the objective.
If the objective is awareness — helping a large team understand what AI is and what it can do — a certification or course can serve that purpose.
If the objective is capability — getting a marketing team to the point where they can build and deploy AI workflows as part of their daily work — then hands-on, practitioner-led training is what produces results.
For senior leaders who need to understand AI at a strategic level and build the internal case for wider adoption, a private programme tailored to their specific function tends to be more effective than any syllabus designed for a general audience.
The question is not “should we train our team?” It is “what kind of training will actually change how they work?”
